RED Quickie: Say I Love You

I've often made the case that when adapting an anime or manga into a live action series, you can't include everything into two hours of film. On the other hand, with 2014's Say I Love You (Sukitte Ii na yo) they try to include several plotlines into 100 minutes of film. The result is something akin to speed dating: after establishing the two leads (your typical popular boy and shy but pretty girl) the film goes on to introduce one plotline and secondary character every 10 or so minutes. By the end of these ten minutes, the plotline is resolved and we move on to the next one.

Another casualty of this accelerated pace is that the relationship doesn't seem as natural as it was in the anime/manga. In fact, a lot of the scenes look really creepy without the proper context. The film trusts that the audience has at least some background knowledge of the source material, but to complete newbies to the series, the effect is jarring to say the least. My sole consolation is the fact that Sota Fukushi and Rika Adachi are in this film (both are from Kamen Rider Fourze, with Fukushi as the title character).

Oh, and happy new year :)
